How Gold Value Works
The value of gold is determined by its weight, purity, and the current market price per troy ounce. When you hear that gold is trading at a certain price, that refers to the spot price of pure 24-karat gold. Most jewelry, however, is not pure gold — it is alloyed with other metals for durability. An 18K piece contains 75% gold, while 14K contains 58.5%. Understanding this distinction is the first step in accurately valuing any gold item — and the first step in understanding what your trade-in is worth.
Melt Value vs. Retail Price
The melt value represents what the raw metal in your jewelry is worth if it were melted down and sold as bullion. This is the baseline — the absolute minimum value of the piece. Retail price, on the other hand, includes the cost of design, craftsmanship, brand reputation, and the retail markup. A simple gold band might retail for two to three times its melt value, while a designer piece from a luxury house could command five times or more.
